Planned burn guidelines
Planned burn guidelines project.
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) Planned Burn Guidelines provide the ecological basis for the QPWS approach to fire management across QPWS-managed lands in Queensland.
The Planned Burn Guidelines are a primary source of ecological information for
- Inspecting park estate to consider ecosystem condition and landscape health.
- Determining and implementing the fire programs that can help maintain or restore ecosystem health.
There is a Planned Burn Guideline specific to each bioregion.
Each Planned Burn Guideline describes key concepts and values associated with planned burning for the ecological health of the different broad fire vegetation groups that are common to that particular bioregion.
The current guidelines were formally published in 2013, and the Queensland Fire and Biodiversity Consortium has been contracted by the Queensland Government Department of Environment and Science to update the guide with the latest science and to ensure the fire vegetation groups are consistent across the state.
The review includes:
- Updating the Planned Burn Guide for the SEQ bioregion, including the latest published science and grey literature.
- Chairing an SEQ Bioregion Expert Panel Workshop to engage with key fire practitioners, both internal to QPWS and externally to better inform the revised SEQ Planned Burn Guide.
- Developing a new introductory volume that supports QPWS officers in their fire ecology and fire management journey. The volume covers topics that are fundamental to undertaking burns for conservation purposes on QPWS estate and common across the state. This will allow each of the bioregional Planned Burn Guides to focus on issues specific to each bioregion.
The QFBC are thrilled to be working with QPWS on this exciting project and are looking forward to sharing the final resources with partners and stakeholders at the completion of the project.
